The art of discipline at the Provenance Center

There are almost as many martial arts disciplines as there are Steven Seagal films, and the idea that one of them could inspire a visual artist makes perfect sense. Maybe not Systema pressure-point disruption by Russian Spetsnaz special forces units, but how about the balletic grace required by practitioners of Tai Chi Chuan? Much better. And so it is for East Lyme photographer David Fryburg. His new exhibit, "The Essence of Intention - Mindfulness, Elegance, and Energy in Tai Chi Chuan," was in fact fueled by the idea of Tai Chi Chuan as "moving meditation" (see image above).

The show opens with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. in New London's Provenance Center. It runs through May 25. Provenance Center is at 165 State St. Hours are 1-5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. For information, call (860) 405-5887 or visit provenancecenter.com.
