Hartford (AP) — Animal rights advocates are traveling to the state Capitol to show support for several animal welfare bills before the Connecticut General Assembly.

The residents are scheduled to meet with legislators Wednesday to call for the passage of proposals that would ban the confinement of breeding pigs in gestation crates and restrict dog-chaining at night or in harsh weather conditions.

They are also expected to lobby lawmakers to pass bills allowing animals to have advocates in court and requiring minimum standards of care for dogs in large-scale puppy mills. The sale of dogs from breeding operations that don't meet those standards would be banned.

The event is sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Connecticut Votes for Animals.
