Norton, Mass. - Sixth-seeded Coast Guard Academy upset a pair of higher-ranked teams to advance to the winners' bracket final of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference softball tournament.

The Bears (22-15) beat No. 3 Babson 1-0 in the opener of the double-elimination tournament and came back later in the day to rally past No. 2 Wheaton 3-2.

Coast Guard, the defending champion, will visit No. 1 Springfield College next Saturday at 10 a.m., with the winner advancing to the championship round on Sunday, May 5.

In the opener, freshman Kristine Kahl pitched a five-hitter and the Bears scored the game's only run in the third when Jessie Richardson singled with two outs, moved to third on an error and scored on a base hit by freshman Morgan Kingston.

Kahl (15-6) also earned the win in the nightcap after the Bears rallied from an early 2-0 deficit. Coast Guard pulled to within 2-1 in the fourth when Holli Bastinck, who reached on an error, eventually scored on an infield out by Stonington's Kelly Grills.

The Bears tied the game in the fifth when Richardson doubled and scored on a base hit by Erin Lisko, and CGA took the lead in the seventh when Summer Dupler reached second on an error, was bunted to third by Richardson ands cored on Lisko's RBI single to right-center.

In other games:

• Senior Meghan Burke went 6-for-8 with two doubles and six RBI as Mitchell College swept a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Wheelock College, 14-1 and 23-2. The Mariners (11-23, 8-10) had 35 hits and took advantage of 11 Wheelock errors.

• UConn split a Big East doubleheader at Seton Hall, losing the opener 11-10 before bouncing back to win the second game 11-1. Kim Silva was 5-for-5 and drove in four runs in the opener for the Huskies (24-23, 7-11) and ex-Fitch star Brittany Duclos added a solo homer.

Baseball

• Avery Point wrapped up the No. 1 seed in next weekend's NJCAA Region 21 tournament by sweeping Community College of Rhode Island, 3-1 and 1-0. New London's Matt Greene capped the sweep with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Matt Martinez. Groton's Shawn Nadeau pitched five scoreless innings before Christian Dzienkiewicz (5-0) earned the win with two innings of one-hit ball. Zach Albin (7-1) pitched a four-hitter for the Pointers (30-6) in the opener, striking out 11 with two walks.

• Mitchell swept a NECC doubleheader at Southern Vermont, 11-2 and 15-4. Ex-Fitch pitcher Al Jordan Johnson (5-3) won the opener for the Mariners (23-8, 14-3), allowing five hits in a complete game effort. In the second game, another ex-Fitch star, Drew Doyle, was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored while Marc Dorsi went 3-for-5 and drove in three.

• Coast Guard committed seven errors in a 13-2 loss to Babson and was knocked out of the NEWMAC tournament. Tim Betts went 3-for-3 with three runs for Coast Guard (21-16). It lost its first game of the day to No. 1 Wheaton, 7-5.

• Notre Dame scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to beat UConn 4-3 in the Big East. Bobby Melley (2-for-4) had a two-run single in the first for the Huskies (25-18, 8-9) while Billy Ferriter went 2-for-3.

Men's lacrosse

• Senior John Lyons recorded his 100th career point as second-seeded Connecticut College defeated No. 7 Hamilton 9-6 in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament. The Camels (12-3), ranked No. 15 in the nation, will play No. 3 Tufts in the semifinals next Saturday at Middlebury. Andrew Freedman had two goals and an assist for Conn while Lyons registered a goal and an assist and now has 60 goals and 41 assists in his career. Goalie Bobby Bleistein made 15 saves.

Men's tennis

• Regis beat defending champion Mitchell 7-2 in the title match of the NECC tournament. Zachary Simmons and Graham Cavanaugh won singles matches for Mitchell (8-6).

• Hamilton defeated Conn College 6-3 in the NESCAC. JC Cangelosi, Jonathan Kraiger and Will Tucker were straight-set singles winners for the Camels (2-11, 0-7).

Men's track & field

• Coast Guard junior Adam Scalesse set a meet, school and facility record as he won the 110-meter hurdles (14.16 seconds) during the NEWMAC Championships at Springfield. He also finished second in the 400 hurdles and was named NEWMAC Track Athlete of the Year. The Bears, who finished third with 114 points (MIT won with 290), had two other champions in Ben Wolhaupter (pole vault, 15 feet, 1 inch) and Will Baker (discus, 147-2).

• Conn College's Mike LeDuc placed second in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:03.50) at the NESCAC championship. Tufts won the title (213 points) and Conn placed ninth (20). Old Lyme's Ian Rathkey, Tristan Cole, Andrew Duarte and LeDuc finished fourth in the distance medley relay and set an outdoor school record (10:13.26).

Women's track and field

• Kyle Sutschek won the discus and placed fourth in the shot put to help Coast Guard place seventh (45 points) at the NEWMAC Championships. MIT won with 228.5 points. Sutschek's winning throw was 129-11.

• Conn College placed 11th with two points at the NESCAC championships. Tufts won the meet (203).

Women's water polo

• Ashley Amey had five of her 10 saves in the fourth quarter as Conn College beat Mercyhurst, 9-7, to advance to the ninth-place game at the CWPA Eastern Championship. Nicky Jasbon had three goals for Conn (16-7).
