A.W. Cox Community Service events this year included the entire student population's effort last fall to drive in used books and good-condition coats to assist Read to Grow and storm victims, as well as several programs conducted by 4th graders, according to parent volunteer Christi Burton. Following Lunch Time Lectures at which kids learned about needs from representatives of community groups, Cox 4th graders organized a Thanksgiving Food Drive for Guilford Food Bank, a sock and mitten drive for LifeHaven (New Haven), and most recently collected Pennies for Puppies for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. The students are currently collecting letters and supplies for active troops as Memorial Day approaches. In addition, in April six 4th-grade families volunteered to serve and prepare a meal at the Community Dining Room, where these Cox students are shown enjoying a meal they helped to prepare and serve.
