AP a win away from nationals

Rochester, N.Y. - UConn-Avery Point is one win away from advancing to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II World Series.

The Pointers received strong pitching performances from East Lyme's Sean Donatello and Brett Shulick to beat SUNY-Orange, 8-2, and host Monroe Community College, 8-6, Saturday in the East District baseball tournament.

Avery Point (36-7) and Monroe (29-13) meet again today at noon in the championship round. If Monroe wins, a deciding game will start 30 minutes following the first game.

The last time the Pointers were in this position two years ago they dropped both games. Monroe is the three-time defending champion.

In game one Saturday, Donatello (9-0) pitched a complete game, allowing four hits while walking one and striking out 10.

Chris Davidson had two solo home runs while going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Tyler McIntyre's two-run home run in the first inning handed the Pointers the lead for good at 2-0 and gave him the program's single-season home run record with 13. Stanley Paul had two singles and Kyle Cummings added one hit and two RBI.

The Pointers scored five runs in the first inning and never trailed in game two. McIntyre sparked the outburst with a three-run home run, his 17th. Cummings and Josh Valdez also homered.

Avery Point built a 7-3 lead before Monroe rallied, cutting the gap to 7-6 in the seventh inning.

Ledyard's Tyler Tonucci relieved Shulick (10-1), earning a save by allowing one hit and no runs in the final 21/3 innings.

Valdez, McIntyre and Jake Matuszak accounted for six of Avery Point's 11 hits off previously unbeaten Monroe starter Ronnie Stout (8-1).
