Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods returning to Bay State to tout casino projects
Representatives of Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods will return next week to Massachusetts, where both casinos are involved in $1 billion proposals.
Mohegan Sun announced in a statement Friday that it will make public the latest renderings and plans for its Mohegan Sun Massachusetts project in Palmer when that town's council meets at 7 p.m. Monday at Palmer High School. Project officials, including representatives of Finard Properties, Brigade Capital Management and architect Kohn Pedersen Fox will brief the media prior to the council session.
Meanwhile, representatives of Foxwoods Massachusetts, the project proposed for Milford, in the Greater Boston region, were scheduled to attend the first of three community meetings in the town Thursday night. The other meetings are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday nights.
"As we continue to meet with Milford town officials and citizens on a daily basis, we learn more about Milford's unique character and incorporate feedback into our planning," Scott Butera, Foxwoods' president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "This is a complex project that requires careful consideration to be done right, and these meetings will provide yet another opportunity for the voices of Milford residents to be heard."
Foxwoods Massachusetts also has scheduled public meetings July 10, 17, 24 and 31 with selectmen and the town's consultants.
Mohegan Sun's original plans for a resort casino in Palmer have grown to include a retail complex, an indoor-outdoor water park and a second hotel. Boston-based Finard Properties would develop the retail complex, water park and second hotel. Brigade, a New York-based investment company, would help finance the original, $600 million portion of the project.
Mohegan Sun is competing with proposals for Springfield and West Springfield for the one casino license to be awarded for western Massachusetts. Foxwoods is vying for the sole Greater Boston-area license with projects proposed for Everett and the Suffolk Downs racetrack in East Boston.
Last Saturday, voters in Everett overwhelmingly approved plans for the casino proposed there by Wynn Resorts.
Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods must reach "host community agreements" with officials in Palmer and Milford, respectively, before submitting their plans to voters in those towns.
