Body of man recovered off Clinton

Clinton — Police and firefighters recovered the body of a middle aged white male this morning about a half mile south of the Clinton channel.

The recovery comes less than four days after Yuri Kirvpichev, 51, of West Springfield, Mass., went into the water from a boat to retrieve a fishing pole near the entrance to the Connecticut River in Old Saybrook and was reported missing. The search was suspended on Monday night. It is unknown if the body recovered today is Kirvpichev.

Police said they received a 911 call from a recreational boater in Long Island Sound about 9:30 a.m. reporting what appeared to be a dead body floating in the water.

Police and firefighters responded and transported the body to the Clinton Town Marina. The body was taken to the Office of the Chief States Medical Examiner’s office so it could be identified and an autopsy performed. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is investigating.
