New London house fire displaces tenants

New London – Residents in three apartments at 69 Montauk Ave. were displaced this afternoon when the first floor apartment caught fire and caused heavy damage to that apartment and smoke damage throughout the home, a fire official said.

New London Acting Battalion Chief Jeffrey Rheaume said heavy smoke and fire was visible from three windows on the first floor when firefighters arrived at 2:28 p.m. The fire was extinguished quickly, but caused heavy damage.

None of the residents of the three apartments were home at the time, Rheaume said. The local chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting tenants, as the building was condemned by the city building official, Rheaume said.

In addition to the New London Fire Department, crews from the Naval Submarine Base FAST Team and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital paramedics responded to the fire, along with the Salvation Army Canteen.

Connecticut Light & Power and Yankee Gas cut off services to the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the New London fire marshal's office.
