East Lyme police say smoke shop was selling synthetic marijuana

East Lyme – Police arrested a Massachusetts man Thursday on charges related to the sale of synthetic marijuana from a Niantic store.

Florin Muradian, 52, of Westfield, Mass., was charged on a warrant with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school and sale of a controlled substance.

The arrest was the result of an investigation that led to a search-and-seizure warrant being executed in March at Sergey's Smoke Shop at 170 Flanders Road. At that time, police said they seized 677 packages of the synthetic marijuana known as Spice. The state passed a law last year making the product illegal.

Bond was set at $50,000 in the case. Muradian is slated to appear Sept. 16 in New London Superior Court.
