City firefighters extinguish fire at Groton liquor store

Groton City firefighters respond Monday to a fire at Eastern Point Wine and Spirits on Eastern Point Road.

Groton — City firefighters extinguished a small fire Monday afternoon inside Eastern Point Wine & Spirits.

City police were first to the scene responding to reports of a burglar alarm at the 390 Eastern Point Road liquor store, which was closed today. Police arrived at about 3:40 p.m. to find smoke coming from the front and the back of the building.

Arriving firefighters found a fire towards the front of the store, with cardboard and a portion of the structure burning, according to City Fire Chief Nick DeLia.

The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes. The city building official, Ledge Light Health District and state Liquor Commission were called in to assess the situation.

City police detectives, who are in the midst of an arson investigation in connection with a fire at a nearby home last month, were also at the scene as a precautionary measure. The cause remains under investigation and no injuries were reported.

Because the liquor store is located in a commercial complex, the city initially called in mutual aid from Poquonnock Bridge, Naval Submarine Base and Electric Boat fire departments, along with emergency medical crews.
