Norwich man assaults girlfriend, officer

Norwich — Police arrested a local man Sunday who they say assaulted his girlfriend and then proceeded to assault a police officer who attempted to arrest him.

James M. Miller, 45, of 166 Yantic St., was charged with disorderly conduct, third-degree assault and assault on a public safety officer.

Police said they responded to Miller's home at about 7:30 p.m. for a report of a domestic disturbance. Miller allegedly punched his live-in girlfriend in the face and fled the residence.

An officer located Miller walking on Yantic Street and attempted to place him under arrest. Miller resisted arrested and punched the officer in the face, breaking the officer's nose.

Miller was also charged with criminal violation of a protective order, stemming from a previous incident involving another victim.

The officer was treated at the William W. Backus Hospital. The victim declined treatment.
Miller is being held on a $50,000 bond, pending his arraignment today in Norwich Superior Court.

Miller has four previous convictions for third-degree assault as well as numerous convictions for breach of peace, violating probation, failure to appear in court and driving with a suspended license.
