New London Police Union, Local 724, endorses City Council candidates

New London - The New London Police Union, Local 724 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, is endorsing a Democrat, a Democrat running against five Republicans and a petitioning candidate for City Council.

The union’s executive board passed a resolution of endorsement after interviews with candidates at the New London Holiday Inn.

The union selected incumbent Michael Passero, a Democrat; Marie Friess-McSparran, a Democrat running on the Republican ticket;  petitioning candidate Carl Lee; and Republicans Martin T. Olsen, Keith Robbins, William Vogel and Mike Doyle. Incumbent Democrat Anthony Nolan, a city police officer, was not endorsed.

Each endorsed candidate, according to the union, has made the police department a priority.

“These highly motivated candidates each outlined a strategic plan to fix the police department’s ongoing morale and leadership problems, with a fully staffed and effective police force,” union President Todd Lynch said in a prepared statement. “It’s not about party affiliation rather the best person suited for the tasks in front of them. Our members are excited and look forward to this new city council ready to make these long overdue necessary improvements.

“This strong endorsement by our union members is considered a key endorsement for each of these candidates to achieve measurable success with the many issues facing the city. We hope to have our slate of candidates move forward as a team," said Lynch.

Local 724 represents 68 police officers in the department.
