Providence College point guard Kris Dunn of New London will have an MRI on his injured right shoulder on Monday.

Dunn, a sophomore, suffered the injury Saturday while chasing after a loose ball midway through the first half of Providence’s exhibition game against Rhode Island College.

His shoulder is sore today but he can move it, according to John Seldon, Dunn’s father.

“It was a freak accident,” Seldon said. “He was going after the ball and the kid rolled on his shoulder. They want to see if it is a tear or just swelling.”

There is cause for concern because it is the same shoulder that Dunn had surgery on to repair a torn labrum in July of 2012, forcing him to miss the first nine games last season. He returned to average 5.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 25 games, including 18 starts.

The Friars expect big things out of Dunn, a McDonald’s All-American out of New London High School, this season. Now his season may be in jeopardy.

“We’re just really nervous because it’s the same shoulder that he tore,” PC coach Ed Cooley told the Providence Journal after the game Saturday. “He’s very, very sore. I’m worried about it.”

Seldon also is worried.

“It’s a big concern because if it is torn, it could be the season for him...,” Seldon said. “We’ll just have to wait until tomorrow to see what happens.”
