Man robs New London store for pack of smokes

New London – Police charged a man Saturday for the alleged theft of a pack of cigarettes during a midday robbery at a Bank Street convenience store.

At 12:48 p.m., the clerk at the Ravi Mart at 268 Bank St. reported a man came into the store and told him to hand over a pack of cigarettes or “he would be hurt,” according to police.

Fearing for his safety, the clerk handed over the cigarettes.

The man walked down Bank Street towards State Street. Police later found a man fitting the description of the thief seated at the parade area on State Street.

Darren McNair, 46, of no certain address was charged with third-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny. He was held in lieu of a $2,500 bond.
