Assault weapons, large capacity magazines must be registered by end of year

State police are reminding residents that the deadline to register their assault weapons or large capacity magazines is Dec. 31.

Earlier this year, the state legislature passed a wide-ranging bill that included sweeping new restrictions on weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines in response to last year's deadly school shooting in Newtown.

State police said an assault weapon certificate must be filed or postmarked by the deadline. The list of banned weapons and the application form (DPS-414C) is available at the state police website www.ct.gov/despp

Those in possession of large-capacity magazine must also make state police aware of the ownership. The application form (DESPP-788C) is also available at the state police website.

The form must be accompanied by proof of purchase or a notarized affidavit attesting to the date the magazine was purchased prior to the law taking effect. There is no return notification on this form. It is suggested that you either apply in person or send the form registered mail.

For clarification of these requirements, please call the State Police Special Licensing and Firearms Unit at (860) 685-8290.
