Massachusetts panel to weigh Sun's Revere plan

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is scheduled to discuss today whether it will allow a partnership between Mohegan Sun and Suffolk Downs to propose a resort casino in the city of Revere.

It's not clear whether the commission will vote today, Elaine Driscoll, the panel's spokeswoman, said Monday.

Representatives of Mohegan Sun and Suffolk Downs made themselves available to reporters Monday at Revere City Hall but reportedly revealed few new details of their $1 billion casino proposal. The partnership was announced last week.

The parties came together after a Suffolk Downs plan for a casino development straddling East Boston and Revere failed to gain the support of East Boston voters. That prompted Suffolk Downs' owners to pursue plans for a project located entirely in Revere. Voters there backed the original plan.

Mohegan Sun began discussions with Suffolk Downs after its plan to develop a casino in the western Massachusetts town of Palmer was narrowly rejected by Palmer voters.

The gaming commission has sought a legal opinion on whether it can consider a new Revere proposal without another referendum being held - a process that could take months.

"The deadline for resort casino applications is Dec. 31 and the commission is not inclined to change that," Driscoll said.
