New London — Two people were displaced in an early morning fire at 20 Raymond St. Tuesday.

Fire Chief Henry Kydd said the fire was reported at 8:43 a.m. He said smoke was billowing from the second story of the single-family home when firefighters arrived. The thick gray smoke could be seen from as far away as the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Kydd said one person was at home at the time of the fire. He said the fire appeared to have started in a second-floor room on the rear, left side of the structure. The fire extended into the attic. The second-story windows were smashed to allow the firefighters to properly ventilate the home.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and had it under control by 9:18 a.m., Kydd said.

The homeowner said she was not home when the fire started. She said that only she and her husband live at the home.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the occupants in finding another place to stay, since utilities to the house were turned off.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Naval Submarine Base FAST team also responded to the fire.
