Police investigate group assault on man in New London

New London — Police are investigating the Tuesday night assault of a 21-year-old man who was approached by more than 10 individuals in the public parking lot near Golden Street.

Police said the assault was reported at 10:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Matthew Gillespie of Orange suffering from cuts to his face and an ear.

Gillespie told police that he left a local bar on Bank Street, which was holding a “welcome back” party for local colleges.

He told police that he was approached by a group of more than 10 males. One of the males punched him in the face, causing him to fall to the ground.

While on the ground, Gillespie told police that several in the group kicked him.

When the group heard the sounds of police sirens, they fled the scene on foot.

Police said Gillespie was treated at the scene by the medical unit of the New London Fire Department and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police said no arrests have been made and need the public’s help.
