Top 10 stories of 2013: Google barge

The Day's news staff looked back at the biggest local headlines of 2013.

A four-story structure known as a "Google barge" was built in New London harbor.

The building attracted attention while construction was underway at the Admiral Harold E. Shear State Pier. Theories about what the structure could be ranged from a floating prison to a Defense Department project.

When consulted, a range of officials either said they did not know all of the details or they weren't willing to divulge them. The Day filed a Freedom of Information Act request for related Coast Guard documents.

On Oct. 9, the barge left for Portland, Maine. Coast Guard documents obtained by The Day showed Google was involved and linked the barge to its twin in San Francisco Bay.
