Bashing for a cause

As an outspoken New London City Councilor and mayoral candidate, Michael Buscetto III often was a polarizing figure in local politics, but once a year the former official brings friends and foes together for a good cause: Buscetto's Bash at the Beach, which raises money for youth activities, libraries, sports and the arts in his native city and new hometown, Waterford.

This newspaper did not always see eye-to-eye with Mr. Buscetto concerning his positions on controversial issues, but with regard to the Bash our vision is 20-20 - it's a worthy event that transcends partisan debate.

We applaud his civic spirit that has helped raise some $300,000 since 2007, when the first bash was staged, and encourage Democrats, Republicans, members of the Green Party and those unaffiliated with any political party to attend this year's edition, scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 4 at Ocean Beach Park in New London.

There will be plenty of food, live entertainment, and if we know Mr. Buscetto, who will once again serve as master of ceremonies, a few well-placed barbs tossed at various targets. That alone should be worth the $15 price of admission.

The board's discussions and information gained from its meetings with political, civic, and business leaders drive the institutional voice of The Day, as expressed in its editorials. The editorial department operates separately from the newsroom.
