Middletown - Jenna Schumacher had 18 points, 12 rebounds and three assists as No. 17 East Lyme used a strong first quarter to down No. 16 Middletown on Tuesday, 46-37, in the first round of the CIAC Class L girls' basketball tournament.

The Vikings led 16-2 after one quarter.

Carynn Bartolucci had 14 rebounds and five assists and Rebecca McGlone had 10 points and 11 rebounds for East Lyme (14-8). Colleen Durkee added 10 points.

The Vikings advance to play top-seeded Hartford Capital in Friday's second round. The Trailblazers (23-0) are the state's only unbeaten team and have been the top-ranked team in the New Haven Register poll all season.

Rejeen Mayo scored 21 for the Blue Dragons.

In other first round games:

• Hannah Hutchins scored 18 of her 27 points in the second half to pace No. 4 Ledyard past No. 29 East Haven, 53-34, in Class L. Olivia DelGrosso scored 12 for the Colonels (20-3), who'll play host to No. 13 Northwest Catholic on Friday.

• Colleen Mueller had 11 points and Hannah Behringer scored 10 as No. 14 Old Lyme trounced No. 19 Parish Hill, 62-14, in Class S. Tina Cain had nine points for the Wildcats (12-10), who'll play at No. 3 Thomaston on Friday.

Men's basketball

• Cane Broome had 30 points, eight assists and six rebounds to lead St. Thomas More to an 84-80 win over Putnam Science Academy in the quarterfinals of the National Prep Championships at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven. The Chancellors will play IMG Academy (Fla.) in today's semifinals at 1 p.m., with the winner advancing to the title game at 7:30 p.m. Yuta Watanabe added 20 points St. Thomas More while Eric Paschall had nine points and six rebounds and Josh Williams had six points, eight rebounds and four assists.

H.S. hockey

• Ryan Terracciano had three goals and an assist while Logan Morin added two goals in NFA/St. Bernard/Bacon Academy's 7-4 win over Fitch/East Lyme/Ledyard/Hale-Ray. Tyler Faulkner added a goal and an assist for the Saints (4-15) while Tyler Hebert had two goals and one assist and Kiefer Stroebel had one goal and one assist for the Eagles (1-19).

Men's lacrosse

• Mitchell College held off Becker, 6-5, to win its New England Collegiate Conference opener. Dan DiGioia and David Clapp scored a pair of goals apiece for the Mariners (2-1, 1-0) while Jordan Cook of Fitch and A.J. Fialkowski each scored a goal. A pair of former local players scored goals for Becker (1-1, 0-1) - Shane Balestracci of Stonington and David Deschenes of Ledyard.

Boys' swimming

• Norwich Free Academy ended its dual-meet season with a 90-78 victory over Granby Memorial. The Wildcats, who finish 6-8, won all 12 events with Tyler Keith (50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke), Jon Yuen (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) and Aidan Karam (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) winning two events apiece. Karam did not lose a single individual race all season.

Women's basketball

• Coast Guard Academy sophomore Torie Sutherland was a second team pick on the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference all-conference team. Sutherland averaged a team-high 11.7 ponits per-game while helping the Bears win a single-season best of 14 games in the NEWMAC (19 overall). Sutherland also led CGA in blocked shots (17) while averaging 6.7 rebounds per game.

• UConn's Breanna Stewart was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week after leading the top-ranked Huskies to victories over SMU, No. 24 Rutgers and No. 3 Louisville. Stewart, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, averaged 21.7 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per-game for UConn.

Youth hockey

• The Southeastern Connecticut Seahawks recently captured the Connecticut Hockey Conference youth state championship in the Squirt Division (ages 9-10), rallying for victories in both the semifinals and championship game on their home ice in Norwich. After qualifying for the final four by going 2-1 in the preliminary round - the Seahawks beat Central Connecticut and West Hartford while losing to New Canaan - they rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to beat ECHO 2-1 in the semifinals.

The Seahawks played West Hartford again in the title game and fell behind 2-1 before coming back for a 3-2 victory and earning state championship gold medals. "Everything finally clicked during the tournament," head coach Dan Williams said. "All the hard work we did throughout the season paid off."

Team members were: Quinten Olshan, Mason Baez, Matt Bradley, Wes Williamson, Jack Nowosad, Billy deCastro, Steven Turchetta, Eric Kananowicz, Nicholas Pisani, Will Anglin, Devin Harris and Anthony Gesino, while Coach Williamson was assisted by Rob Nowosad, Frank Gesino and Steve Turchetta.

The Seahawks' PeeWee team also qualified for the final weekend of the season after going 3-0 during the premlinary round but lost in overtime to eventual champion Pawling (N.Y.) in the semifinals.
