Turkuaz plays Strange Brew Pub

The brassy Turkuaz plays Thursday in Norwich.

I'm suspicious (and embarrassed) when I don't understand a band name. Case in point: Turkuaz, who perform tonight at the Strange Brew Pub in Norwich.

Turk-u ... what?! What does that mean?

(Quick check of dictionary: Turkish for "turquoise." Question: why not just say Turquoise? Maybe the music is indigenously Turkish ...)

Well, no. It turns out Turkuaz is not from Istanbul but Brooklyn - and in fact they're a very fine, nine-piece, hard-charging funk band. Since the world is desperately short on good funk bands, we're happy to have Turkuaz headed our way. They're readying their third album, "Future 86," for an April release, and tonight's show kicks off a long and extensive tour.
