Former New London man accused of sexually assaulting girl in his care

New London – Police arrested a former New London man Friday on charges he sexually assaulted a young girl left in his care.

Erik Walton, 29, faces two counts each of first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor, both felonies. Police received a complaint against Walton on Dec. 27 from the victim's mother, according to a statement from Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard.

The young girl had disclosed to her mother that Walton, a family friend, had her perform sexual acts on him on two occasions in 2013 while he was baby-sitting her at a New London home. The girl claims the assaults took place in November and December.

Police said Walton was living in New London at the time but moved to Waterbury when the initial complaint was brought forward.

Walton, who was living at 27 Garden Circle in Waterbury, was taken into custody by Waterbury police on Friday and taken to the new London Police Department where he was held in lieu of a $200,000 bond. He is due to appear Monday in New London Superior Court.
