Connecticut animal advocates seek to ban farm practice

Hartford (AP) — Animal advocates are meeting with Connecticut legislators, hoping to persuade them to support legislation banning a particular farming practice.

Wednesday marks Humane Lobby Day at the state Capitol.

Lawmakers are considering a bill that would prevent a farmer from knowingly tethering or confining a gestating sow in an enclosure known as an immobilizing gestation crate. Advocates said such crates prevent the animal from freely turning around, lying down, standing up or fully extending its limbs.

Several legislators, including North Stonington Rep. Diana Urban and Bridgeport Jack Hennessy, have scheduled a news conference on Wednesday to discuss the legislation. Annie Hornish, the Connecticut state director of the Humane Society of the United States, is also scheduled to be on hand for the event.
