Longtime manager at New London schools to retire

New London — Valerie A. Tamano, who for 30 years has worked in New London Public Schools, announced this week that she will retire June 30.

Tamano, the manager of the district's executive support services, submitted her letter of retirement March 10 and made public her decision at Thursday night's Board of Education workshop.

"It is hard to believe that 30 years have come and gone," Tamano wrote in her retirement letter. "I remember so vividly that I began my career in this district with a profound sense of pride, dedication and a deep love of the New London Public Schools — and I leave the district with that same unwavering pride, commitment and love."

Tamano has been an essential part of the district's leadership team, and board members praised her at Thursday's meeting, noting that she always had the information they needed — even before they knew they needed it.

Tamano said she hopes her retirement will allow her to devote more time to other things she is passionate about.

"While the next chapter in my life is yet to be written, I have no doubt it will include continuing to support the students, staff and parents of the New London Public Schools, as well as the citizens of the city of New London," she wrote.
