Stonington celebrates 10th year of Hall of Fame

Stonington - Stonington High School will induct nine athletes, including 2003 graduate Blake Jensen, a two-time all-state pick who led the football team to the Class SS playoffs as a senior, and one contributor into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Saturday, April 26.

For this year's 10th annual event, the hall of fame will induct the 1942 football team, the first time an entire team has been chosen for this honor.

Other inductees are Everett B. Law (Class of 1933, football, basketball, track, cross country); Donald E. Palmer (1937), for whom the high school's football field is named; Robert Birchall (1943, football, baseball, track); George R. McKenna Jr. (1943, football, baseball); Bill Reardon (1969, football, basketball, baseball); Lee Ann Lewis Schoenecker (1978, tennis, basketball, track); John Bolduc (1980, football, track); Haley Sutman Graham (1994, tennis, basketball, track); and Charity Schmitt Cress (2000, soccer, basketball, track).

The Bears' 1942 Eastern Connecticut Conference champion football team was one of the most respected teams in Connecticut that season and often called the best in school history, with four players earning first team all-state distinction.

The ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Stonington High Cafe-Commons. Those wishing to attend should send a check for $35 per person to: SHS Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, c/o Dr. Stephen Murphy, Stonington High School, 176 South Broad Street, Pawcatuck, 06379.
