Man dies in Stonington hit-and-run accident

Stonington — A 51-year-old man who was struck by a car early Friday morning in a hit-and-run accident has died of his injuries, police said.

Capt. Jerry Desmond said the accident was reported at 5:11 a.m. on Route 2 near the intersection of Route 78. The unidentified man was taken by Life Star helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

Desmond said police are notifying the victim's next of kin before releasing his identity.

He said a gray car was seen fleeing the scene. He said he could not provide further information as police are actively investigating several leads.
