Hospital mistakes are statistically infrequent

The April 18 letter, "Control medical errors, not citizens' firearms," expressed concern that according to the Institute of Medicine about 98,000 deaths were reported due to hospital mistakes.

But the writer should also know that according to the American Hospital Association's 2012 report there were about 36,156,245 admissions.

Although even one preventable death is regrettable, perhaps knowing the total number of admissions to hospitals will temper his interpretation of the Institute of Medicine's report.
