Ledyard — A driver and two young children were injured early Sunday morning when he lost control of his car and struck a telephone pole on Route 12 in Gales Ferry before landing upside down in a swimming pool on adjacent Baldwin Hill Road.

The driver, Marcus Harvin, 25, of New Britain, suffered possible internal injuries and was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Police said one child suffered a fractured leg and the other a serious arm injury.

The Ledyard accident reconstruction team and state police responded to investigate the 1 a.m. crash at 1363 Baldwin Hill Road. The area of Route 12 and Long Cove Road was closed for several hours as police investigated and the utility pole was replaced.

Neighbor De’Anna Smith, 43, said Sunday that she went over to the residence when she heard noise from the crash.

“It sounded like six cars had just hit,” she said.

She said she saw officers remove a young boy from the car and saw an officer in the pool working to remove another child. She said she left because the scene was too difficult to watch.

“Having a child myself, I just don’t think I could handle seeing, myself,” she said. “You don’t keep going after hitting two telephone poles with two babies in the car.”

Police said Harvin was driving his 2005 Acura south on Route 12 when he lost control and struck a pole on the north side of the road. The car continued across Long Cove Road before coming to rest on its roof in the swimming pool which was covered by a tarp.

On Sunday, a section of the roughly 6-foot-tall white picket fence surrounding the pool was down in the yard.
