New bake shop is a family affair in Salem

Salem - The owners of Corner Cupboard Country Mart & Bake Shop didn't tell anyone they were going to open last Thursday morning.

They simply updated the chalkboard outside the bakery, located on Hartford Road in the space formerly filled by Four Corners Country Deli, to say "open today," and customers started showing up.

Word of mouth travels fast in a small town, said co-owner Missy Alevras, and "people have been chomping at the bit for us to open."

Alevras operates the store with the two brothers behind 2 Brothers Pizza & Pub - her husband, Alex, and her brother-in-law, Nik.

But all three of them are quick to say the bakery is really about Missy's mother, Jean Latham, who stood quietly behind the counter kneading dough on Thursday. She's "amazing," said Nik.

Latham is responsible for the baked goods sold at 2 Brothers, which Missy and Alex said are always in high demand. On Thursday, her cakes, pies, scones and muffins - all made on the premises - were visible underneath Corner Cupboard's glass counter, tempting customers.

Corner Cupboard is also a country market, and the Alevras family plans to stock the store with local and artisan goods.

Customers can already purchase coffee from Ashlawn Farm in Lyme, artisanal olive oil and balsamic vinegar, maple sugar from a business in Vermont and jellies and jams from Woodbury's Winding Drive.

By summer the Alevras family envisions a farmers-market-like selection of local produce, honey and cheeses.

The owners said they plan to hold a grand opening in three or four weeks.
