Moving event honored those who serve

On May 25, the 7th annual vigil for our servicemen and women was held in New London at the Parade with luminaries that were lit up all around the Whale's Tail fountain. This year honorees were the late Lt. William and Ens. Elizabeth Foye. Their families attended the memorable event. Many of the same people have supported this event over the years.

It was unfortunate that no one from The Day was there to take a photo or write a story about the event honoring our fallen servicemen and women and the ones still serving. As we were almost finished with the service a Navy sailor, who just got off the train, was about to get into a waiting car and as he did so, Donna Vendetto ran over to ask him to join us for a few minutes. He did, shyly, but the clapping for him was so moving - he said he was from Kentucky - that it made the whole event worthwhile.

Organizers included Donna Vendetto, Val Tomano and Kathy Lupin and her husband, Glenn. I commend them. Special gratitude goes to Rev. Michael Belt, Ron Donovan, Mike Discordia from the VFW and Lisa Baez and all the volunteers.
