UNH student from Niantic honored

Brett Rankowitz of Niantic was awarded the Bronze Cross Legion of Valor Achievement Award in May.

He is a senior at the University of New Haven who is majoring in criminal justice and a member of the UNH Reserved Officer Training Corps program. He was given the award because of his outstanding performance during his junior year. Nationally, less than 50 cadets and midshipmen receive the cross each year, according to a news release from the UNH.

"Brett's constant desire and willingness to achieve a higher standard warranted this prestigious award," said Capt. Sean Ritchie of the UNH ROTC program to the UNH. "Every single day he performed to the best of his abilities, and he consistently set a positive example for others within the program."

He will be the company commander of the UNH ROTC this fall and has served as an ROTC team leader, squad leader, platoon sergeant, platoon leader and company first sergeant, according to a news release from the UNH.
