Deteriorated Norwich neighborhood playground dismantled
Norwich – The city Public Works Department tore down the popular neighborhood playground at the site of the former William A. Buckingham School Monday after an inspection showed that the wooden equipment had deteriorated and could not be repaired.
City Manager Alan Bergren said Monday that many of the wooden posts were loose and rotted below the surface. Above ground, the wood had splintered and was decayed.
Bergren said Public Works Department officials are seeking outside funding sources to see whether it's possible to rebuild the playground. He said it might take a combination of sources of funding to replace it.
“We periodically inspect all the playgrounds,” Bergren said. “When it’s an entire playground that is deteriorated, we have no choice but to remove it.”
