Connecticut posts 5,800 jobs gain in May

Connecticut reported a robust gain of 5,800 jobs in May as the state Department of Labor released today its monthly employment report.

The state’s jobless rate remained unchanged at 6.9 percent.

Unfortunately for southeastern Connecticut, nearly all the job increases last month were seen in Hartford County, which posted 5,700 new positions. The Norwich-New London labor market actually saw a decrease of 100 jobs between April and May, according to the new statistics.

“Connecticut nonfarm job levels now exceed levels reached before the deep winter freeze set in during January, and are now at a new recovery high,” said Andy Condon, director of the Office of Research, in a statement. “At this point, the resiliency of the recovery appears to be bringing people back into the labor force.”
