Celebrating New London's lighthouses
It's time, once again, to celebrate New London's lighthouse heritage. The New London Maritime Society is holding its fourth "Sentinels on the Sound: Summer Lighthouse Weekends" starting this weekend and running through Oct. 26. (That's minus July 12 and 13, which is when SailFest happens.)
The fun to be had includes:
Lighthouse harbor tours - on the hour, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, leaves from Custom House Pier; $35, $25 for ages 6-12
New London Ledge Light Tour - 2:30 p.m. every other Saturday starting this Saturday, leaves from New London City Pier; $35, $25 ages 6-12
Night-Time Lighthouse Tour - 9 p.m. July 19 and 26, Aug. 16 and 23, leaves from Custom House Pier; $35
Plum Island Tour - 7 a.m.-4 p.m. July 25, Aug. 15, Sept. 12 and 29, Oct. 9, leaves from Old Saybrook One Harbor; $35
Other activities include Shennecossett Yacht Club's 1st annual SYC Lighthouse Regatta on Aug. 2, and an exhibition at the Custom House Maritime Museum featuring Bob Landry's three-foot model of Race Rock Lighthouse and a Crouse-Hinds rotating beacon from Cape Lookout State Park, Oregon.
