'Sail for Tall Ships Day' July 12, proclaimed in honor of Morgan
Mystic - Mystic Seaport and Tall Ships America have proclaimed July 12 as "Sail for Tall Ships Day" as traditional sailing vessels around the country will sail in honor of the whaleship Charles W. Morgan.
The Morgan, which is now in New Bedford, Mass., as part of its two-month tour of historic New England ports following its five-year-long restoration at Mystic Seaport, is the world's last surviving wooden whaling ship.
The organizations said that on July 12 sailing ships from around the nation will put to sea to honor the restoration and heritage of the Morgan and to celebrate the traditional seamanship skills that are preserved on the fleet of tall ships around the country.
"It is a national celebration of nautical skill, courage, and adventure that defined America as a young seafaring nation in 1841 when Morgan was launched, and still defines us as a maritime power today," said the organizations in announcing the event.
