Weather delays Morgan's departure from New Bedford
Mystic Seaport announced today that the Charles W. Morgan will not be leaving New Bedford, Mass. its original homeport, until Tuesday because of weather conditions.
“The forecast for sustained winds and gusts and sea conditions for Buzzards Bay exceeds our level of comfort for operating the ship,” said Dana Hewson, the museum’s vice president for watercraft preservation and operations, in an announcement this morning.
The world’s last surviving wooden whaling ship had been scheduled to sail to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy at the south end of the Cape Cod Canal on Monday, a trip it will now take on Tuesday morning. The next leg of the journey after that, a trip through the canal and across Cape Cod Bay to Provincetown, Mass. has also been pushed back a day and is slated to take place on Wednesday.
The ship’s itinerary from July 11-13 remains as scheduled with a series of day sails on the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.
The Seaport has built in extra days into the ship’s summer tour of historic New England ports to account for bad weather.
