Local roundup: Pawcatuck softball wins state Junior League opener
Pawcatuck - Pawcatuck won its opening game in the Connecticut Section II Junior League (13-14) softball tournament with a 27-1 win over Colchester/Willimantic on Wednesday night.
Pawcatuck will play Enfield/Windsor Locks in today's winners' bracket final with the winner advancing to the championship round of the double-elimination tournament.
Trinity Lennon did not allow hit over three innings and struck out six. She also had three hits and drove in four runs. Erin Craig, Abby Flakus and Cameron Dreher each added three hits and three RBI apiece while Briana Beverly drove in four runs.
State softball final (10-11)
• Fairfield advanced to the Connecticut Little League (10-11) championship round with a 10-0 win over Waterford at Rocky Hill. Waterford will play Seymour in the losers' bracket final today.
State Div. 3 baseball (9-10)
• Mystic defeated Madison 9-0 in the first game of the Connecticut Division III tournament at Rocky Hill as Jason Erb and Cam McGugan each pitched three shutout innings. Offensively, Colin Anderson had three hits and scored twice and McGugan doubled.
• T.J. House pitched five shutout innings and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Connecticut Tigers 2-0 in the New York-Penn League.
The Tigers (15-17) had only four hits, but two were by Ross Kivett.
