    Driver dies after hitting retaining wall in Norwich

    Norwich — The driver and sole occupant of a motor vehicle that crashed into a retaining wall at 348 W. Thames St. early Friday morning died of his injuries that evening, Norwich police said.

    Police identified the man as 27-year-old Frank Jones of 87 Spring St.

    Police, responding to numerous 911 calls at 12:05 a.m. Friday, found the black 2005 Mercedes Benz CLK500 with heavy damage. Firefighters from the East Great Plain Volunteer Fire Department extricated Jones from the vehicle. He was transported initially to the William W. Backus Hospital and later flown by Life Star to Hartford Hospital.

    Norwich police said he died of his injuries at 6:03 p.m.

    Witnesses told police the vehicle may have been traveling at a high speed, passing vehicles on the left as it traveled northbound on West Thames Street.
