Whaling ship Charles W. Morgan scheduled to arrive in New London today
New London — Nearing the end of its summer tour of historic New England ports, the whaling ship Charles W. Morgan is scheduled to arrive at City Pier about 10 a.m. today.
The ship left the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, Mass., at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Because of the length of the journey, Mystic Seaport said the ship will be towed and not sailed to New London. Today’s arrival time depends on weather and sea conditions, according to the Seaport; updates on the ship’s progress will be posted at www.mysticseaport.org.
City Pier will be the last stop for the ship before it returns to the Seaport on Aug. 6. While in the Whaling City, the Morgan will conduct three final day sails on Long Island Sound on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The ship will not be open to the public.
The Morgan will then head to the Seaport on Aug. 6 with a homecoming celebration planned for 5 p.m. The public is invited to welcome the ship, which is slated to arrive at 6:15 p.m.
Beginning at 5 p.m., the Seaport will offer reduced admission of $5 for those ages 6 and older. Children 5 and younger and Seaport members will be admitted free.
The Morgan, the world’s last surviving wooden whaling ship, began its current voyage after completion of a five-year restoration. Built in 1841, the Morgan made 37 profitable voyages around the world during an 80-year career that ended in 1921. It came to the Seaport in 1941.
The ship left the Seaport on May 17 and then visited New London, Newport, R.I.; Vineyard Haven, Mass.; New Bedford, Mass.; the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, where it sailed alongside whales; Boston, where it docked next to the USS Constitution; and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where it helped celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Cape Cod Canal.
