Local roundup: Mystic 9-10s play for New England title tonight

Cranston, R.I. - Mystic finished unbeaten in pool play with a 13-0 win over Vermont champion Essex Junction at the Little League Baseball Eastern Regional (ages 9-10) tournament Thursday.

Mystic (4-0) plays Rhode Island champion Lincoln, which finished 3-1, in the New England championship game today at 7:30 p.m. Lincoln and Mystic did not meet in pool play. The Mid-Atlantic championship game is at 5 p.m. Thursday's winners play for the title Saturday at 11 a.m. That's the end of the line, as there is no World Series for the 9-10 age group.

New York-Penn League

• Connecticut's ninth-inning rally fell short, as the Tigers lost to the Jamestown Jammers 3-2. The Tigers (27-26) trailed 3-0 entering the ninth. Rashad Brown and Will Maddox drove in runs in the ninth. Kasey Coffman singled and doubled for the Tigers.

H.S. fall sports

• Montville High School registration is Monday, Aug. 18 at the nurse's office from noon-5 p.m. All fall athletes must register and bring a signed parent permission form, which are available in the main office.

Athletes must also bring a copy of a current (within the last 13 months) physical. Football conditioning begins Aug. 18 at 5:30 p.m., all other sports begin Aug. 23. Contact: Athletic director Walt Sherwin at wsherwin@montvilleschoolso.org.

• The New London High School football team will be holding a parent/student information night on Aug. 12 in the lecture hall at the school starting at 6:30 p.m. Required paperwork will be available.
