Stonington — The Board of Police Commissioners this afternoon will consider whether to allow golf carts on public streets in Lords Point.

If approved, the town would follow other area town such as Old Saybrook and East Lyme that have allowed the use of golf carts in certain sections of their communities.

Police Chief J. Darren Stewart said the department has received a number of requests from Lords Point residents to use golf carts. He said state law allows towns to authorize the use of golf carts on public roads where the speed limit is less than 25 miles per hour.

The limit in Lords Point is 20 miles per hour, and there is just one road that provides access to the waterfront community.

At this point, if the proposal is approved, Stewart said it appears it would apply only to Lords Point.

He said state law also requires golf cart users to register the carts, have insurance, a driver’s license, a flag, brake lights, a horn and seat belts for rear-facing passengers. In addition, there is no nighttime operation.

The board will meet at 5 p.m. today at the police station.
