Accused killer Keith R. Delvalle has hired a private attorney who will be working with Delvalle to decide whether he wants a probable cause hearing in New London Superior Court.

Delvalle, 29, is charged with fatally shooting Jesus “Gee” Pinero near Connecticut Ave­nue and Prest Street in New London on Aug. 29, 2013. He has retained attorney Corey J. Brinson of Hartford, who appeared with him Wednesday in court. Brinson also has a Norwich office.

The court had appointed attorney John E. Franckling to represent Delvalle after New London police retrieved Delvalle from New York City in May to face murder charges. Delvalle notified Judge Hillary B. Strackbein during a court appearance in July that he was seeking to hire a private attorney.

Delvalle has not yet entered a plea in the hearing or notified the court whether he wants a probable cause hearing. As a defendant in a murder case, he is entitled to a hearing within 60 days of his arrest. He has continued to waive the time period while seeking an attorney.

He is being held in lieu of $175,000 cash at the Hartford Correctional Center on charges of murder, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, unlawful discharge of a firearm, criminal use of a firearm and commission of a Class A felony with a firearm.

The arrest warrant affidavit that New London police used to secure his arrest is likely to remain sealed at the request of State’s Attorney Michael L. Regan, until Delvalle decides whether to go forward with the hearing.

Delvalle will be back in court on Sept. 19.
