New London — State police Tuesday identified the man who jumped off of the Gold Star Bridge and died last week as 28-year-old Tobias Smith.

Smith has an uncertain address but was staying for a time at the New London Homeless Hospitality Center, according to an employee there.

Smith’s jump from the bridge on Thursday prompted a search by state and area police and fire departments. His body was pulled from the Thames River more than three hours after the search began.

His death was ruled a suicide by drowning, according to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
