New London — Police arrested a man Monday who they say attempted to sexually assault two minors.

Clayton Denny, 37, of no certain address, was charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree sexual assault, two counts of risk of injury to a minor, first-degree unlawful restraint, resisting arrest, breach of peace and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said at 5:53 p.m. they responded to the area of Grand Street for a report of two males fighting. When police arrived at the scene, they learned that Denny had restrained a 9-year-old girl and tried to have her perform a sexual act on him, police said.

The victim was able to escape and ran to her home with Denny in pursuit. A 15-year-old boy saw what was happening and stopped Denny at the door. Police said Denny then tried to sexually assault the teenager, and they began to fight.

Denny fled the area and was spotted several blocks away hiding in the rear yard of 37 Spring St.

Police said Denny fled from police and after a short foot pursuit and struggle he was taken into custody. They also discovered that he had additional warrants out for his arrests, where he was accused of violation of a standing criminal protective order, second-degree burglary, violation of a protective order, third-degree criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

Denny is being held on a $250,000 bond, pending his arraignment today in New London Superior Court.

Denny has an extensive criminal history, including convictions for assault on a public safety officer and second-degree strangulation.
