Police investigating decomposed body found on Huntington Street in New London
New London - A state Department of Transportation worker clearing brush in the wooded area near Huntington Street near the Interstate 95 North on-ramp discovered a decomposed body Friday morning, police said.
State police Lt. Michael Thomas said the skeletal remains were found by the DOT worker near Exit 84 at about 10:30 a.m. He could not say whether the remains were male or female, but he did say that the death did not appear to be suspicious at this time.
A state police press release Friday afternoon said the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct a post mortem examination to determine identity and the cause and manner of death.
The area is near several homeless camps in the woods and within walking distance of the New London Homeless Hospitality Center.
Cathy Zall, executive director of the hospitality center, said she was not aware of anyone being reported missing but noted that there is “so much turnover in the people we see.”
State Police Major Crime Squad detectives were examining the scene for evidence, according to the press release.
Yellow crime scene tape blocked off a wooded portion of the highway earlier Friday. Three state troopers were seen emerging from the forested area.
New London police also responded to the scene.
