Ryan secures 12th term in 139th District
Montville — State Rep. Kevin Ryan, D-Montville, secured his 12th term representing the 139th District on Tuesday, fending off Republican challenger Jonathan Gilman of Bozrah.
Unofficial results had Ryan receiving 3,797 votes to Gilman’s 2,135 votes in a district that includes the town of Bozrah and portions of Montville and Norwich. Ryan garnered votes on both the Democratic and Working Families Party lines.
The victory was not surprising given the fact that Gilman had not campaigned or spent any money promoting himself as a candidate.
Ryan, 62, was still at home when the final numbers filtered in Tuesday night.
“It’s good to know I’ll be able to return and finish some of the work I started,” Ryan said.
Ryan said he was pleased with the support from his constituents, the people he said are the motivation for his career in politics.
“It’s always good when you can help someone with an issue … help work through some level of bureaucracy. It’s a good feeling.”
Ryan is a Deputy Speaker and member of the appropriations, public health and environment committees.
Gilman, 61, is the Republican Town Committee Chairman in Bozrah, who had not anticipated a run at Ryan’s seat this year. His name on the ballot was initially a placeholder but he said he stayed on when no other candidate stepped forward.
“I’m a placeholder still but I told Ryan in two years I’ll give him a run for his money,” Gilman said.
