Baby Trey among blizzard births at Backus, L+M

Trey Tyler Winkelman was born at 10:03 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, at William W. Backus Hospital, almost one month before his due date. He weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces at birth.

Groton - Someday, Travis Winkelman will tell his son about the day he was born, during the blizzard of 2015.

“I’ll definitely remember it because it was supposed to be the worst storm ever on that day, and of course we have to have our kid on that day with no warning,” said Winkelman, 29, a Groton City police detective.

Trey Tyler Winkelman, now 7 days old, was born at 10:03 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, at William W. Backus Hospital, almost one month before his due date. He weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces at birth.

Four mothers delivered babies at Backus Hospital during the blizzard, and two pregnant mothers were driven by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and gave birth during the storm, hospital spokesmen said.

Winkelman said he’d brought his clothes for work the morning of Jan. 26 and was dropping off his two daughters, ages 6 and 3, at school and day care when his wife called.

Marielle Winkelman, 30, was calm but told him it was time to go to the hospital, he said. He told her he’d be right home. The couple lives in Ledyard.

“At that point (the snow) wasn’t bad at all,” Travis Winkelman said. “We knew it was coming though, and we knew it was going to be early dismissal” for schools. So he picked up his wife, brought her to the hospital, and his aunt picked up the children. Then they waited, and watched the storm blow in. Hospital staff stayed overnight, while another shift arrived early. A statewide travel ban went into effect at 9 p.m. Jan. 26.

After Trey’s birth, relatives teased Travis Winkelman that he should name his son “Juno” after the storm, but he told them no. Winkelman’s grandparents and uncle made “Trey” part of his nickname growing up, “so it was a name that I always knew I would name my son.”

Someday, Winkelman said he’ll tell his son “that he has awesome timing.”
