Water taxi funds still afloat in Hartford

The bill to provide $100,000 in state funds to operate a water taxi across the Thames River this summer has advanced out of the General Assembly’s Environment Committee to the Appropriations Committee.

The Environment Committee on Friday unanimously voted to move the bill forward. It is now in the Legislative Commissioner’s Office, where language and financial impact will be reviewed before it proceeds in the Appropriations Committee, Jamison Bazinet, spokesman for state Rep. Aundré Bumgardner, R-Groton, said Tuesday. Bumgardner and state Rep. Kevin Ryan, D-Montville, are co-sponsors of the bill.

“It’s still cruising along,” said Bazinet. “It’s still alive at this point.”

Last month, the steering committee for the proposed Thames River Heritage Park issued a request for proposals for an operator for the water taxi. The taxi would ferry visitors between park sites in New London and Groton. The deadline for proposals is March 13.
