    Make a Difference: Safe Futures

    Who: Christina, 36.

Agency: Safe Futures, which annually provides free, confidential services and support for 5,000 women, children and men affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.

Her situation: Christina was a successful adult and an active member of the community before her ex-boyfriend assaulted her. As a result of the attack, he was charged with attempted murder, and she, after multiple surgeries, is living with permanent disabilities. It will be two years before Christina will be eligible for aid for the disabilities, most notably the traumatic brain injury. Today, Christina is unable to work, read or write. She now walks with a cane. Luckily, friends and family help her with daily needs, and take her to medical and legal appointments. But Christina is unable to support herself due to the injuries. She is optimistic though, as she looks toward a safe future for herself — and others. When she is ready to go back to work, she would like to train to become a domestic violence victims' advocate.

What to give: Funds for transportation, electricity and medical expenses; gift cards for groceries and necessities throughout the year; body lotion and body wash, sweaters (XXL), scented candles and coloring books and pencils.

To donate: Emma Palzere-Rae, Director of Development & Communications, 16 Jay St., New London, CT 06320 or eprae@safefuturesct.org; cash donations also may be made on line at www.SafeFuturesCT.org; enter Make a Difference in note.
